Architecture, Cities, Interiors

Design that brings people together

Environmental and Social Fabric
Leverage the environment—especially its micro-climates—to shape extraordinary places

Founded by Rome Prize Fellows Phu Hoang and Rachely Rotem, MODU is a transdisciplinary studio at the intersection of architecture, urbanism, and interior design. Since 2012, we have been designing climate-responsive spaces that engage with their surroundings, integrating architecture with the city and interiors with nature.  By bridging design, ecology, and data, we bring to light the stories of communities—whether neighbors, friends, or family—that guide our work.

Based in Brooklyn, New York, MODU is a certified minority-owned business (MBE) in both New York State and City, and holds LEED certification. We prioritize collaboration and organize think tanks that include experts beyond the built environment, such as sociologists, technologists, ecologists, and artists. This approach offers holistic solutions incorporating diverse viewpoints for cultural institutions, commercial enterprises, public organizations, and private clients.

Our studio has collaborated with inspiring private clients on projects of all sizes. We have also worked with leading cultural institutions such as the Cooper Hewitt Smithsonian Design Museum, Times Square Arts, Design Museum Holon, Creative Time, and Art Basel Miami Beach. Additionally, we have partnered with visionary commercial enterprises like Frog Design, Duggal Visual Solutions, and Confindustria Ceramica.

MODU is honored to have been recognized by both national and international institutions, with awards from the American Academy in Rome, the National Endowment for the Arts, the American Institute of Architects, the Architectural League of New York, and the New York State Council on the Arts. Our book, Field Guide to Indoor Urbanism, is part of the collection at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Library.
