Profile
Phu Hoang, AIA, FAAR
Phu Hoang is the Founding
Principal of MODU. A Vietnamese-born American architect, he has practiced in
cross-cultural contexts for more than 25 years in the United States and
internationally. Integrating design practice with interdisciplinary research,
he leads the studio with a focus on improving daily life through environmental
and social experience. He is a recipient of the Rome Prize in Architecture from
the American Academy in Rome and the Emerging Voices award from the
Architectural League of New York. He co-authored, with Rachely Rotem, Field
Guide to Indoor Urbanism, now included in the National Design Library
collection at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
Phu Hoang has directed the
design and construction of numerous projects at MODU, including the mixed-use
development Promenade, the Mini Tower One multi-family
residential project, and Exhale art park. He is an Adjunct Associate
Professor at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Architecture, Planning,
and Preservation, and previously served as Head of the Architecture Section at
The Ohio State University’s Knowlton School of Architecture. He holds a Master
of Architecture from Columbia University and a Bachelor of Science from the
Georgia Institute of Technology. Phu Hoang is a licensed architect in New York,
a Passive Building Associate, and President of the Society of Fellows of the American
Academy in Rome.
