Profile //

Phu Hoang, AIA, FAAR, PA

Phu Hoang is a Founding Principal of MODU. A Vietnamese-born American architect, he has practiced for more than 25 years in the United States and internationally. He leads the studio’s multi-scalar work, connecting buildings, cities, and interiors through climate-responsive design.

At MODU, he has directed the design and construction of projects including the mixed-use development Promenade, the multi-family residential Mini Tower One, and Exhale art park—together advancing the integration of domestic and urban life. He is the recipient of the Rome Prize in Architecture from the American Academy in Rome and the Emerging Voices award from the Architectural League of New York. He co-authored Field Guide to Indoor Urbanism, now included in the collection of the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum Library.

Phu Hoang previously served as Head of Architecture at The Ohio State University’s Knowlton School and has taught at Columbia University, Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. MODU has received research support from the U.S.–Japan Creative Artists Fellowship of the National Endowment for the Arts, the New York State Council on the Arts, and the Robert Rauschenberg Foundation. He is a licensed architect in New York and President of the Society of Fellows of the American Academy in Rome.
